Mesothelioma Treatment

There are three different types of treatment for Mesothelioma and the treatment depends on many different factors. The type of treatment will primarily depend on the stage of the cancer, where the cancer is, how far it has spread and how the cells appear under the microscope.

The three types of Mesothelioma Treatments are:

- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation Therapy

The surgery treatment is used to take out the cancer. There are several different surgery procedures used, all depending on which stage the cancer is in. Some of the procedures are Diagnostic Procedure, Palliative Procedure, and the Potentially Curative Procedure. A person should always understand the benefits and risks involved when proceeding with one of these procedures for treatment. Always express your concerns with your physician and be sure that all of your questions are answered to your satisfaction and understanding.

The chemotherapy treatment is used by using drugs to fight the cancer. The drug is used to destroy cancer cells by preventing them from multiplying. It is also is used to shrink tumors prior to surgery and to destroy microscopic disease that may remain after surgery. It can also be used to relieve pain. It is always important to discuss the use of chemotherapy with your physician so that you understand the effectiveness of the administration and the possible side effects of the drug. Depending on the patient, the side effects can be mild to moderate and can even require a removal from the chemotherapy treatment.

The radiation therapy treatment is used by using high dose x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill the cancer cells. It can be used in a combination with surgery or palliatively to control symptoms. The radiation can help control the spread of tumors left along the tracks by several different procedures. There are three different types of radiation surgery and they include external radiation therapy, radioisotopes, and internal radiation therapy.

While there is no cure for mesoththelioma, these treatments are always available to a person with the cancer. There have been recent studies shown that using a single one of these treatments have failed to improve the survival rate of a patient unless used with a combination of the treatments.
