Mesothelioma Types
There are three different types of mesothelioma cancer.
- Pleural Mesothelioma
- Peritoneal Mesithelioma
- Pericardial Mesothelioma
The three largest cavities of your body that the cancer affects are the lung cavity (pleura), the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and the heart sac (pericardium).
The Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of the mesothelioma. It affects the section of the mesothelioma called the pleura and is a malignancy of the tissue casing of the lungs. There are many different symptoms of pleural mesothelioma but the most common one is chronic chest pain. It is caused by a buildup of fluid inside the pleural space. Some of the other symptoms include shortness of breath, fever, weight loss, and chronic coughing.
The second type of mesothelioma is Pericardial Mesothelioma. It affects the lining of the heart and is the least common type of mesothelioma. In order to relieve the symptoms of the constriction around the heart you have to remove the pericardium. It is currently the only treatment. As with the pleural mesothelioma, there are several different symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma. They include a mass in the space between the lungs, chest pain, abnormal breathing, and fluid buildup around the heart.
The third type of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma. It is the second most common type of mesothelioma and it affects the lining of the stomach. It is usually caused by the ingestion of asbestos fibers. The fibers become lodged in the mucous lining the mouth and the esophagus and it travels through the digestive system where it can develop into a tumor. Some of the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are swelling, weight loss, fever, blood clotting problems and several more.
Mesothelioma cancer affects the serous membranes that surround the major organs in the midsection of your body. Different organs can be affected because the serous membranes surround the lungs, heart, abdomen and others. In order to understand mesothelioma you first need to understand cancer. Cancer is uncontrolled cellular growth. Normally your body cells grow, die off and re-grow into healthier cells. Cancer cells are damaged and as the body starts to reproduce them they take over the healthy cells in your body causing system failure in your body.
